![]() The original Church on the St Peter’s site was dedicated to St Michael, and was erected in 1120. In 1200, on Christmas Day, it was burnt down although parts of the structure were saved. |

The present “Old Church” was built between 1225 and 1230 and was then dedicated to St Peter. |
The tower was built in 1588 to carry the bell given to St Peter’s to commemorate the victory over the Spanish Armada. The beams are made from ships timbers from that period. Two more bells were added later, the most recent in 1926. |
It shows the two arches and pillars which have been retained, as well as the chancel which was demolished to make way for the new church extension. It can be seen that the structure of the roof in the chancel is different to that in the main nave. Also hanging on the wall at the junction of the nave and chancel is the helmet which is said to have been owned by King Henry VII and is dated as 1500 AD. A sword that accompanied it was stolen many years ago |
